MARO designs is protecting the Environment

Cowbone and cowhorn were used for household, decorative and medicine artifacts in African tradition. When an animal was slaughtered, everything was used:

• meat for food
• hide for garments and tools
• bones and horns for household, decorative artifacts

The raw material, cowbone and cowhorn, sometimes camelbone, comes directly from the slaughterhouse. You can call it “the leftover of the steak”.

Going Green – Use of waste material & recycling

Cowbone and cowhorn mill can be used as natural fertilizer – cowhorn especially contains a lot of nitrogen, cowbone nitrogen and calcium. Kenyan soil mostly lacks nitrogen. This natural fertilizer feeds the soil instead of draining it , it is very economical, as you don’t need to increase input with time. Leftover ground bone and horn mill is collected and sold to private gardeners.

Paperbags – As packaging material in Kenya, we use paper-bags worked on recycled paper, produced by a group of former street boys.

Included in our final products are:

Paperbeads – worked on recycled paper (cut out of magazines).

Glass beads – recycled glass beads from Nani Crozes KITENGELA manufacture and training center.

Aluminium beads – worked from up-recycled aluminium (old car engine parts), produced especially for us, protected by polish to be smooth on the skin.

Up-cycled cotton strings –  leftover from t-shirt production Kiboko leisure wear.
